Federal Pacific Electrical Panels

Federal Pacific Electrical Panels

Research indicates that certain FPE circuit breakers may be susceptible to issues that could result in failures, inadequate protection of circuits, and more severe concerns such as fire hazards and electrocution. While the Consumer Product Safety Commission has not formally recalled these products, it is important to note that the panel in question is outdated and the manufacturer is no longer in operation. While we are unable to categorically label this panel as defective, we recommend consulting a qualified electrical contractor to obtain their professional assessment for your peace of mind.

Zinsco electrical panels are known to pose a potential fire-hazard, and it is recommended to have them assessed or replaced by a qualified electrician. Zinsco panels can typically be recognized by a blue and silver "Zinsco" label located inside the panel, along with an embossed "Magnetrip" label on the upper part of the panel face.

Challenger Breakers

Challenger Breakers

The circuit breakers on Challenger panels have been observed to overheat and may cause scalding on the bus bars. The identification of a Challenger panel can be confirmed by the sticker located on the rear right, in addition to the labels on the breakers. During a home inspection, a home inspector is generally required to report the type of panel present as a defect.

Pushmatic Breakers

Challenger Breakers

Unlike modern electrical panels that utilize lever-style breakers which toggle between "ON" and "OFF," Pushmatic breakers operate with a push-button mechanism. Each breaker requires manual engagement to reset or deactivate. Additionally, Pushmatic breakers do not incorporate a magnetic sensor; therefore, they may not respond in the event of a short circuit. It is also important to note that Pushmatic breakers can become stiff over time due to their design, which relies on metal pivoting mechanisms instead of internal springs. For your safety, it is advisable to upgrade Pushmatic panels to modern electrical panels that conform to current safety standards.
